Buying into things because money is cheaper than emotional blackmail.

In lieu of flowers for Mother's Day my mother gets an iris card and poppy wrapping paper. This combination, and the fact that there was something that required wrapping, makes me a super-fantastic, totally lazy and unoriginal child. She won't care when she's eating the chocolate though.

I do like a nice thoughtful gift.

Aside from chocolate [which she will need as she watches], the old dear is getting the new Jane Eyre on DVD.

Filigree hamsters...?

Frankly baffled.

Clearly not a 'Fawlty Towers' fan where Manuel from Barcelona has a pet hamster which is actually a giant rat. Much funnier on screen.

I have a mouse living in my space heater and I am not putting a mouse trap in the middle of the lounge room.

"No Mr.Fawlty ... ees not rat, ees Filigree Hamster"

Speaking of cooking and of Laxettes, I know a woman who followed her friend's suggestion to make the bastard husband a chocolate mousse to remember ...

Let me tell you a story, JahTeh... Many years ago when I was but I sweet and impressionable young thing I went a poor and rather tragic high school. This high school had this one 'treat' that they would bring out for us every time one of our teachers wagged, or they were too lazy to teach us anything, or when it was the end of term and they just wanted to shut us up for half an hour. [Can you see where this is heading...?] That 'treat' was a video of Basil-the-rat. It was torture. The first half of Basil-the-rat DOZENS of times. Never the end. I still can't watch that episode [or most of Fawlty Towers] without twitching. It's so bad that I;ve tried to block it out.
The really awful thing is that my sister had exactly the same experience. This is how I know I'm not exaggerating.

Ann, see above...

I'm sorry to add to your trauma. It could have been worse, a 6 hour marathon of 'The Bold and the Beautiful'.
